I'm starting my Comp Sci. studies in early september, and thought it would be a cool idea to get a small study group going. It would consist of dedicated people, who are willing to use a few hours each day to study. Our first group study would be Head First: Java, and we would each get a certain amount of pages to read, and do the requested assignments and whatever else we can think of. This should be a good motivation to get things done, so if anyone is interested post here and let's get this ball rolling.

We will be using MSN Messenger or another equivalent, as well as perhaps Ventrilo or Skype.

Post your age, location, background in programming and what your goals are.

I'll start out.

Age: 26
Location: Denmark
Background: Some CMS, HTML, CSS and some other programming, but still not very far.
Immediate Goals: Learn Java in preparation for my studies.
Other interests include self-help, business and I do the occasional game of dota.

"DoItNow",
Welcome to the JavaRanch.

We're a friendly group, but we do require members to have valid display names.

Display names must be two words: your first name, a space, then your last name. Fictitious names are not allowed.

Please edit your profile and correct your display name since accounts with invalid display names get deleted.

Usually study groups are organised as a part of the certification process, I'll move this thread there for you in a second.

We suggest that groups not use names like 'JavaRanch', 'Head First' and the like (although feel free to refer back to them!) as it has happened on occasion that groups have performed... questionable activities.

Welcome DoItNow,

Yeah, it should be better if you post your real name. So, we can know you better.
I prefer using MSN Messenger since I have been using it for years.
And for our sheriff, I think it should be better to move this post to other section.

Btw, this my profile.

Well that was quite a welcome, thank you.

I do however find it weird that you remove this thread into obscurity where no newbie will ever find it, including myself. This is simply a way to get in contact with a few like minded people, who wish to learn Java via. the Head First book. So it has no strings to JavaRanch whatsoever.

Could you kindly move it back to Java Beginners, Thank you Sheriff.

"Tro DoItNow", your name still does not conform to the JavaRanch policy on display names. Your display name should be a real-sounding name with a first name and a second name. Obviously fictitious names are not allowed.

Your name "Tro DoItNow" is not a real-sounding name. Please read the name policy carefully and change your name again.

Thank you.

The SCJP forum is not an obscure corner of JavaRanch - it is the most frequently used forum. People who are busy studying for SCJP will find it quickly if it's in the SCJP forum.

Hmmm... Last I checked, the Beginner forum has 110,330 posts, and the SCJP forum has 186,721 posts, so I would hardly characterize this as a move "into obscurity." I've moderated both of these forums. Believe me: Your post will be seen by plenty of newbies.

Hello,
I've just started trying to learn Java on my own and am already reading the head first book. A study group would be great especially as I get into the later chapters. My schedule is kind of hectic so I may not be able to join all the meetings but would participate whenever I could.

Age: 30
Location: USA
Programing Experiance: Some HTML and C++ but it's been years since I've applied it to anything.
Immediate Goals: Just want to learn something new

This is exactly what I need. I am ~100 pages into the head first book and am completely lost. As another poster said, my schedule is going to be hectic going into the semester, but I'll do my best. Let me know about which programs exactly you want to use for communication for this because I don't have any of the ones mentioned.

I do have Windows, but as marc implied maybe others do not. Maybe a different service? I already have AIM, but it seems maybe MSN Messenger might be more universal...?

According to a Nielsen/Netratings survey conducted in March 2006, AOL [AIM] still has a commanding lead in the IM market, with 53 million active users worldwide, compared to MSN/Windows Live Messenger with 27 million...

AIM works with iChat on Macs. And actually, it turns out there is a Microsoft Messenger for Mac too.

You still can use other third party IM to connect you Windows Live Messenger, such as Trillian, or GAIM in Linux. Maybe I should create AIM account too.

Btw, please post your IM account.

AIM: JakeMiller13
I currently do not go on that much, but if this is the way people want to communicate I will go on regularly.

Have we decided on a way of communication *coughAIMcough*?
