Hi all,

Though i am not new to java but i am having very less hands-on in JAVA..
Please suggest me should i go for scja or scjp. Actualy i want something to be added in my resume(related to java) which will prove that i have knowledge in java(and the test which i can clear in less time due to personal reasons).

I am a software engineer having 1.5 yrs exp in unix and db2.. but want to complete one java certification. I am basicaly from comp sc background.

Please suggest.

Not a problem. It depends on the actual need of the individuals. If you really need to understand the concepts before going for the certification, it may take on an average of 3 to 4 months.

Or, if you are in a hurry to take up the certification, it can be done in a month itself.

Practice well.
All the best!

Hi

I would suggest you to read two books.
One by kathy sierra and Bert bates
and the other one by Khalid Mughal.

Both books are equally good and I believe a combination of both will easily help us clear the exam

Thanks
Praveen SP

But... isn't it only for Java 1.4 (ipso facto for SCJP 1.4 not for 1.5) ?

I also have a similar question,
Currently I am working as a tech support intern and planning on graduating from a 4 year college with Computer Science degree May 2008.
By the time I finish my school I will have 1, 5 or 2 years experience. Eventually I see myself in Java Developing or programming in a year or 2.
By the way, this fall semester I am taking a java class, it is only an intro level.
Let's say, if I decide to take a Java Dev-r exam what materials do I need to read and how long does it take to fully prepare for an exam so I can pass it successfully?

thank you!

Hi all

Yes the Khalid Mughal book is for 1.4.
But we can use that book to read the rest of concepts since its presented in a really good form.

Thanks

I don't think it is so. I have checked with sun website (See my signature for the SCJP homepage). If at all thats gonna happen, there should have been an indication, but i did NOT find any.

Its good way to start with SCJP. Have you been to any Object Oriented programming earlier, like C or C++? if not then you can begin with initial chapters from sun tutorials,

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/index.html

specially these three.
1. oops
2. classes and objects
3. and interfaces and inheritance.

they are really worth to lay the basic foundations.

I am already aware of core java as well as J2EE concepts... (actually was trained in java when i joined my organisation but training was not benificial as such) but not into depths of it... i m comforatable with the concepts very well but just not much hands on the code... so was bit worried if would be able to clear the certification or not.

Time is also a constraint for me as i have to take the certification which can be completed fast as well as would add up to my resume due to some personal reasons.

Having said that, i think you can start reading through K&B's book and i think you would be able to take up the exam earlier.

But irrespective of the time limit, one good suggestion is to take many mock exams as they will definitely boost your confidence!

Good luck!
