CX-310-055 is the current version of the SCJP exam, for Java 5.

CX-310-056 is an upgrade exam for SCJP for Java 5. You can do this if you are already certified with an older version of SCJP (1.4 or older) and you now want to upgrade to SCJP 5.

CX-310-035 is the SCJP exam for Java 1.4, the previous version of Java.

Why would you want to certify for 1.4 first and for 5 later? That will just cost you more money, more time and more effort.

Why don't you go directly for SCJP 5 (CX-310-055)?

I am preparing for the scjp1.4 certification. My friend told me that java5 is unpopular in india and no one here is using java 5 for the software development.I want an advice. After seeing this thread i got confused.I already bought materials for scjp1.4 k&b book and prepared well.I am waiting for exam registration. In this time this topic really confused me.

The current version of Java is version 6, which has been out since December 2006. Java 5 is already almost 3 years old (it was released in September 2004). Java 1.4 is already more than 5 years old (released Feb 2002).

I have no idea about the popularity of Java 5 in India, but time flies and more and more companies will adopt newer Java versions.

I don't think you need to be worried if you have just gotten your SCJP 1.4 or if you're busy studing for it. So Arunan, if you're already on your way for SCJP 1.4 then you don't need to switch to SCJP 5 immediately. Anyway, you could do the upgrade exam later if you think it's worth it.

But if you're just starting with studying for SCJP, then why not go for the latest version - it will have value for a longer period into the future.

Oh well, that's an illusion. I would say this is high-time for SCJP 5. I am not aware of the other parts of the country but in past three months atleast a dozen of my friends here in Chennai have opted for and cleared SCJP 5.
