It seems that a lot of folks are moving development to India cuz it's cheaper.
What does a Java engineer in India earn in a year (in U.S. dollars) ??

Hi Paul
I am in US, I got this information from my brother who is working in India. As per him, the average salary for a 2 years exp. Java programmer is Rs. 30,000 ie. $660.00.
Howz that ? No wonder the companies are rushing to India.

Though I live and work in the US, I am keenly following the IT-industry in India. During my recent visit to homeland I discovered that the IT salaries have more than tripled since I left India five years ago.
To answer your question Paul, a person with about four years of Java experience can earn about Rs.80,000 per month before taxes. That is about $2000. Eventhough you pay about 48% in taxes, you will be left with a LOT of money when you consider the cost of living.

To be frank a programmer / sr. java architect with more than 2 years of experience won't stay in india for long (except by choice). Yes salary range is Indian Rs. 40,000 - 70,000 month. Out of this 30% is paid as a perk like allowances, so you pay less taxes.
But at that level, your responsibilities list will be big, so expect at least 50hr per week.
