I dont code for a living or on a daily basis, only as active interest but would like to take it further/challenge myself a little more so if there is no one such big project that incorporates what you need to know/learn is it just a case of tiny little practice programs that applies what you need to know as found in the SCJP book? Or may be I could design one solely for the scjp!!! what do you reckon ??

It's not that type of exam. It tends to test the basics of the language and so any single application/project is unlikely to use all of the basics. Thus an interesting project would involve some type of interface (web or swing) which is entirely outside the scope of JSP.

Don't worry about not programming with Java for a living, get hold of the syllabus and start trying to do some mock exams. Write lots of small programs to help learn the basics. When I say small I mean around 20 lines of code.

You dont have to code for living to get SCJP. Infact, many people who do so dont have SCJP. So in order to be SCJP certified, you can created your own min i projects for practicing all the topics covered in the exam.
Dont worry about any web based project ; just practice with standalone Java applications. That should be good enough.
