do take some mock exams and work on simulators. Self study is enough but practice is very important.

Welcome to JavaRanch!

This question is impossible to answer with a yes/no answer. It depends on your own experience with Java and programming. It's ofcourse possible to learn it without formal training, but if you have little knowledge and experience it will take more time and effort to find it all out yourself.

You'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth it to do a training course, or if you can learn it all by yourself (and with the help of your new friends on JavaRanch... )

There are no trainings out there that will be as good and as detailed as your own studying. Most trainings goes by real fast, you barely know what happened and it's already ended. Unless the training is free, otherwise I would suggest using the money on books and whizlab/enthuware. that's all you need.
