The filters are too restrictive.
The pages are heavy.
The smilies mess up code.

This is a java forum. Why is it using cgi?

It's time to update the forum software.

Search this forum and you will see countless posts about this. Also look in the FAQ you will see why this forum is not Java.

That's easy to say, but a lot of hard work.

There seems to be a lot of talent here, much of it underemployed (if you believe the Jobs Discussion forum). Is there a way that those folk with time and talent on their hands can help? Should we form a posse to round this up and bring it in.

That's very ambitious. Do you propose building forum software from scratch, or using something like jive forums?

Guys,

Please search this forum for previous instances of this identical discussion. It always goes the same way. Somebody complains, a staffer says it's a lot of work, somebody does a Mickey Rooney "Let's have a show in the barn!" , there's a brief discussion, then everybody disappears.

We've actually done lots of ground work on this in the past, behind the scenes, including setting up, customizing, and trying out Jive, mvnforum and to a lesser extent JForum. That's the easy part. The hard part is (1) preserving the same atmosphere with different software, and (2) doing the actual data migration and transition without major disruption. When you look at the pros and cons, moving to new software just for the sake of moving really isn't very compelling. The trivial reasons mentioned in this thread (what "filters " is he talking about, anyway? And there's already a checkbox to turn off smilies when you post) don't even begin to make up for the risks involved. This is a great community -- no one wants to destroy it by making careless "improvements."

Ernest, that is a great summary of our situation. I hope you don't mind that I blatantly used it for to update http://faq.javaranch.com/view?NewForumSoftware ...
