Hi Paul !!!

Head First JAVA is a book to learn Java in general.

The K&B book(SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide) is a book to prepare the exam.

It depends on how much you are confident with the java language.
If you have not use java in pass, start with Head First JAVA.
If you know about java, only K&B book will be suffiscient to pass the exam.

Good luck !!!
