What are the rules to follow when trying to figure out shadow variables problems?

This generally comes down to checking the scope of variables. You need to check variables used locally and see if there are any variables with the same name that have been defined with a wider scope.

This also applies to parameters passed to methods that have the same name as an instance or static variable.
