Unfortunately, it's articles like these that make everyone want to jump on the Java bandwagon. Personally, I think this article will come to a different conclusion if it was written now with the current market condition.

That's why a college degree is so valued by US Corporations.
Separates the "here today - gone tomorrow" types from the guys who will be around when the going gets tough

i am getting mixed messages from all the posts here. some say SCJP will not help and some say it will (at least to get an interview). some say a degree doesn't matter and some say it is a MUST...
i am a junior (end of this semester) computer science major in georgia. i have taken 4 c++ classes, the most recent being object oriented programming (more theory than c++). however, i feel that Java is the way to go, and of course my school is dropping c++ this fall in order to teach Java. so, i am teaching myself by rewriting my c++ programs with the final objective being SCJP and an internship next year.
anyone here in georgia that can give me a feel for the Java job market (no experience outside of school)? i am also hoping that my Navy Electronic Warfare background will help...

"...my Navy Electronic Warfare background..."
Ah! The 'good old days'!
I worked in the programming of RWRs in the late 1970s when I was a young lad in my 20s. 100% assembly (and proprietary at that) language. It was the AN/ALR-66 for the LAMPS helicopter of the Navy to be exact. Made by General Instrument Corp. of Long Island, NY.
You are in a good position converting C++ programs to Java and as importantly, finishing a college degree which is very important IMHO. Twelve months ago a college degree in CS/CIS may not have been as necessary when companies, including the ones with no decent business plan and run by youngsters whose previous job was delivering pizza in college before they dropped out, were hiring anyone with a pulse.
There are still good jobs around but this time the employers are going to be more picky. And a college degree will always help.
And a good score in the SCPJ2 Certification exam can only help.

First of all, I hope the readers of that article read the DATE of publication! Ha ha!
Seriously, the article that Peter cited uses total compensation (salary plus benefits) which I find
useless. It's just trying to make the number sound higher for sensationalistic purposes. I'd rather read the BASE SALARY and that's it. I can do my own math, thanks!

tony,
thanks for the encouragement... that is what i was looking for. i do plan on an internship so i can get some "documented" experience. also, i do not plan on an $86k salary like that article said... at least not for the first 6 months
i miss the 'good ole days' once in a while (long while). however, i wish i could have executed the "emergency destruction proceedures" on my AN/SLQ-32(v)3 like the guys on the EP-3 did. considering the amount of technology we have today, it is absolutely pathetic that i used the equivalent processing power of a Commodore 64 to monitor the electromagnetic spectrum off the coast of Iraq!
they are working on a new system (AN/SLY-xx) that will be much faster and much more user friendly... kind of what you would think an Electronic Warfare Specialist would need during a missile attack, right?

Yep Greg, I'd say that! (about the missile attack!)
Good luck with that internship and finish that college degree!
