I've been a secure IT job for the last few years. Translation: I'm bored out of my mind, my Java is rusty and my Java is out of date.

A few years ago I bought the Sierra & Bates book for the SCJP 1.4. I learn best by taking THOROUGH notes on a book, then studying my notes ( in addition to coding practice ). I did that, for the entire book.

Life got in the way and I now see that the current Java and SCJP are 1.6, not 1.4. I ordered a new Sierra & Bates for 1.5

I would hate to think that I would have to start ALL over again with carefully going through 9 chapters and taking new detailed notes.

Is the new S & B book for 1.5 similar enough to the old one for 1.4 that I can use my old notes if I simply read the new chapters and take SOME notes on NEW things?

Am I back to square 1?

Am I better off ( and can I ) taking an exam for 1.4, getting the certification and then dealing with upgrading?

Thanks in advance for any information

"Steve",
Welcome to JavaRanch!

We're pleased to have you here with us here on the ranch, but there are a few rules that need to be followed, and one is that proper names are required. Please take a look at the JavaRanch Naming Policy and adjust your display name to match it.

In particular, your display name must be a first and a last name separated by a space character, and must not be obviously fictitious. You can change it here

Hi Steve,

First off, take Ben's advice.

As far as the 1.4 vs. the 1.5 goes, I would say that about 30-35% of the 1.5 book us new. So, if you're careful about looking over the new objectives vs. the old objectives you should be able to focus your efforts on the new stuff, which is pretty well encapsulated.

hth,

Bert
