From the BBC:
"The US economy has grown by 2% during the first three months of 2001 - twice as fast as analysts had predicted."

England looks better.

A number of sectors were doing better than expected, for example auto sales plunged earlier but made a surprisingly quick comeback. When people are buying on the dips, it's not a recession just yet.
Besides, manufacturing and housing are key indicators...when you say it still sucks, to what to you refer?

Hey everyone.
Nothing for nothing, but what matters most to us is IT, and here in NY job-market is COMPLETELY DEAD for 4 months now, majority of consultants (myself included) were let go, start-ups go belly-up every day. Rate for consultant with 3-4 years of real Java exp. J2EE, EJB, JSP and Servlets went from $100 - $110per/hour
to $45.00. Yep, rates dropped 2,5 times. As a career consultant of 7+ years, as speak from experience and hate to say it, but it's gonna be hell now getting a job this summer, boys and girls .
We need another 6-8 months to ocmpletely recover from this crisis. Sorry to paint such dark picture, but reality is a reality.

And reality is a personal thing... a matter of what affects you at this moment and place in time.
I personally think that $110/hr was high. The market is adjusting to REALITY.
Welcome back.

If you visit cnnfn.cnn.com regularly, you can see that market is improving. NASDAQ roses 15% during April.
Can we relate the job market with that?
If market continues to improve like this, approximately how much time we can expect the Job Market to get better?
Can we expect that good time on IT professionals will be back soon?
Can Java H1 holders expect to be called by their companies very soon?
John, Tony and Marcus what is your point of view?

Views on marketplace:
Things are definitely picking up. Dure to: first, the stock markets and positive economic reports. Secondly, it's spring and the job market normally seeks an increase in activity at this time.
From my perspective: Phone calls are up since last Tue/Wed. Have been averaging 2 phone calls per day now. Also, recruiters (corporate and headhunters) are starting to call.
It's not great - but it is an improvement.

Regarding the H1B mess. Who knows? There are alot of Americans looking for work right now. I went to job fairs last week here in Denver and they were totally swamped.
A good many defense projects comming down the pike. I guess there is a race to get satellites in orbit. Most defense companies can only hire US-Citizens. Also, alot of the projects deal with C/C++.
-------
Just my two cents.
