I am a Java beginner. I want to do Java Certification. Will a beginner be able to prepare for the certification by self studying. Usually how many days of preparation is required for a beginner?

Hi deepa,
Yes beginners can complete certification (SCJP) by self study.
And the time required depends on how quick you get the concept, programming practice and of course your enthusiasm
Anyways to begin with, decide upon the certification you wish to take SCJP1.4/5.0/6.0 and then start with the resources (this site itself being one of the best ). I recommend to start with Head First Java by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates again best for beginners.
And you will find everything you need right here.

Hope this helps

Hi Amit
Thank you. I wanted to know the time required to prepare so that I can plan prepare accordingly. How to choose the one in SCJP1.4/5.0/6.0?

We have a forum devoted specifically to the SCJP exam. I think this thread might be a better fit over there.

Hi Deepa,
As I've said, that depends on your current exposure to the language and technology, but for a rough estimate, let us say a daily two hours study & practice for two months should suffice.
But if you are entirely new to OOP concepts and programming, add another 20-25 days.
But again that's flexible, if you give some effort and enthusiasm, you can cut it down to just 20-25 days.
And which exam to opt for depends on your choice. The SCJP 6.0 is the latest version available but you can think of 5.0 or even 1.4 if need be.

Hope this helps

The 1.5 and 1.6 are almost identical, and the 1.4 is very old. At this point, I'd say that most people should focus on the 1.6 - you get the benefit of having the "latest and greatest" certification with only a tiny bit more effort than the 1.5.
