That depends on how familiar with Java.. if you know the basics of Java and are comfortable writing simple programs pick up a copy of SCJP book by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates and start studying , it is the best book for the exam and covers everything you need to know
If you are completely new to Java pick up a copy of Head First Java and start studying from it..

Try to figure out which version you are interested in and then go ahead and buy the book. Preparation will take time whose length is dependant on how comfortable your are with java
