Hi,

I have been your member for a pretty long time and I must say in my two certifications, javaranch has been a great help.

I would like to request you to add a new forum related to GIS. This is a very upcoming field for everyone and java plays a very important part in this.

Please analyse the importance and add a new forum related to GIS in javaranch.

Thanks
Kapil

I agree that GIS is an important topic - it's a big part of the system I currently work on!

But I don't remember seeing many questions regarding GIS at JavaRanch. What makes you think that it would get enough traffic to warrant its own forum?

Ilja,

I cannot say whether it will drive enough traffic or not. But I suggested it according to the popular trends in the industry and everyone is very enthusiastic about GIS. And everyone knows that its the next big thing.

Well, right now if I have a question on GIS then there is no place in javaranch to put such question, so I thought having a forum on GIS will create curiosity among ranchers and as well as help those who are working on GIS.

Hi Kapil,

In the past we have found that adding new forums and hoping for members usually does not work. We like to see a reasonable amount of traffic on a given topic before we create a new forum for it.

Regards, Andrew

Yes, ArcView, and MapInfo are the two leading suppliers in the UK. Some of their related tools use Java. Sadly, I don't use this technology any more

MapInfo
ESRI ArcView
FreeGIS - Open Source Mapping Tools

A bit of hyperbole there perhaps?

Depending on the nature of the question, I'd say that either Java in General or Other Products would be the appropriate place.

Thanks Ilja for clarifying the query.

Well, it seems that there is some time before GIS catches up with other java technologies.
