I'm an SCJP with no experience in Java with 2 years in ColdFusion.
I figure one way to get some experience is to find an opensource project, but there are SO MANY on sourceforge.net and I can't tell which ones are likely to be promising.
Can someone recommend a good project for a certified newbie?

I didn't even know about all those opensource projects, thanks.
In my opinion don't worry about which might be "promising", find one that interests you instead, and just jump in.
