Going for the real thing. SCJP exam within 7 days

Well after a lot of studies, I am now going for SCJP. I hope I will get good marks. But there are a few things at which I am stuck.

1. Is SCJP voucher the same for 5.0 and 6.0?

2. I am weak at API related questions. The first question arises only because of this. Doest 6.0 exam has more questions related to API or not. I am good at everything, Concurrency, Generics(although I only got into generics some time ago), Inner Classes, Basics of Java, Exceptions and Assertions...You name them. I am only weak at Collection Classes and a little bit on File IO and Wrapper classes.

So basically can anybody give me tips about the type of questions that are asked about Collections. If you think that this weakness of mine will result in less marks in the 6.0 exam, then I will give 5.0 one, otherwise I will go for 6.0. I can't disappoint everyone in my office and those who know me here, I have to get something over 90%.

3. I have done the master exam and a few other free exams including inquisition. Can anyone tell me some of the good free exams, as I fell that some of the free exams are a bit off the track. So I don't want to waste my time on those off beat exams.

In scjp 5 exam i got collections and File I/O questions as drag and drop questions and they were easy, regarding files remember constructors and how to use them.

And I am sure you are going to get above 90%, don't keep that in your mind when taking exam, go with cool mind and give the exam you will surely get more than what you expect

Hi Ankit,

The SCJP exam is quite easy (if you read thoroughly enough). The questions can be in a random order and it is tough to say how many questions of API contents may come.
My advice to you is read, read and re-read till you know that even if Bert Bates or Kathy Sierra ask you questions, you will be able to answer in a jiffy.

Another advice to you is that - DON'T WRITE THE SCJP 5.0 EXAM. Its a waste, I feel its best to write the latest exam (always).

Since you seem to be weak in collections, io, wrapper classes ..., i suggest that you don't hurry and write your exam. TAKE YOUR TIME.

And try Whizlabs for practise tests.

Hi Ankit

If Voucher diplays 310 prefix then it will be usefull for any of 310 prefix exams so you can pick up any one version of SCJP (1.4 ,5.0 and 6.0).

Can anyone tell me what % of the questions will be related to the API. I just want an approximate figure...

Another thing, I have made a strategy for the exam. On the first pass I will solve the questions for their logic. I will look out for easy compile time errors. I think after the first pass I will be exhausted. So at the second pass I will look specifically for compile time errors in questions. This would not take much time as some questions will have no option for compile time errors(including Drag and Drop ones). I will also look for pit-falls that I might have missed in the first pass. I just want to ask that is this strategy OK or should I change it.

One more thing, I gave Sun's mock exam on a simulator software, it has option for writing notes for every question. Is this also available on the real exam??

Also I will need some rough papers for calculations. Will the exam center provide me that or should I take them with me as a backup...

I have made a strategy for the exam

My strategy was to solve the easy ones first since all questions carry the same weight. Whatever works out for you would be the best strategy.

option for writing notes

I cannot recollect this option on the real exam. Your notes would have to be written on the piece of plastic they give you. No paper / pen / pencil will be allowed. You can only use what they provide

Do search this forum for exam tips. There are a lot of posts out there. Also beware of the drag and drop bug which will make you lose the answers when you review them. It appears you are well prepared. Good luck

Why? Seriously, why do you want to put yourself under that kind of stress? Isn't there enough stress involved in writing the exam?

Choose the strategy you want, but why should you take a look at the logic first to find out later there were compiler errors? You'd be wasting your time and energy. I'd go first for compile time errors, then take a look at the logic. But that's just me. Choose whatever you feel comfortable with.

And finally. If you already know what your weak points are, then concentrate on that. Study the Collection's and IO's API. You still have one week time according to your mentioned plans. And ask yourself what it is more important: to pass an exam on to learn from the experience and become a better IT professional. When that will be clear in your mind, the rest will follow naturally, and I am sure you'll get a great score. Just don't make it your most important goal.

Actually everyone in my office is expecting a 100 from me so I will have to get over 90. I can't help it, that's the way it is...

About the strategy you told, I made this strategy because I think after the first pass, the brain will get exhausted a bit, and then it will be tougher to understand the logic.

But you are also right. So what I will do is find errors and follow the logic at the same time. In each question I will look for potential pit-falls related to compile time errors before following the question logic..

I am still waiting for my voucher...I will study on my weak points in the mean time..
