Lost Thread

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
I spent a whole 30 minutes yesterday typing a response to a thread, what some perceive as useless babble, but in any case, I'd like to archive what I had written for my own records. I assumed that the thread would remain alive forever in the JavaRanch database, however, the thread appears to have been deleted; one can only assume due to the denigration of the quality of the thread content, which is understandable. Is it possible to restore threads, or at least, send the thread to me in private?

The thread was titled something like "Banning concrete inheritance" on the "Java (Advanced)" forum.

That thread was moved to the Trash Can. I don't think we have a policy on whether trashed threads are available for private archiving.

Other moderators?

If we were to try and make a strict policy on whether trashed threads are available for private archiving, then I would suggest that we don't allow it. In the cases where something has been moved to the trash can, it is often because discussion has either already become inflamed, or because discussion has a huge potential to become inflamed, or the topic should not have been created in the first place.

So for us to provide this information to any private party would mean that we would probably have to remove anything that does not reflect well on JavaRanch. Having a policy that says we will provide trashed topics on request effectively requires our volunteers to do clean-up on topics - something they may or may not have time or inclination to do.

So rather than adding a requirement for volunteers to do work, I would rather have a policy that disallows such requests.

Disclaimer: I don't like policies. As soon as you have a hard and fast rule, some people try to find the loopholes. We only have two major policies here: the "Be Nice" rule, and the "Naming Policy", and we have seen how often members try to abuse these two policies.

I would rather have no explicit policy set, rather we just allow a situation where members may request a copy of a topic here in the JavaRanch forum (just like Tony has done), and it is then at the discretion of the moderators whether the request is fulfilled (by which I mean that if any moderator wanted to clean up the thread and provide it, then they would be able to do so; but if no moderator felt like it then the request would not get fulfilled).

Regards, Andrew

As an aside, we used to not have a Trash Can. When a thread was gone, it was gone.

I moved the thread to the trash because there were some extremely not nice comments in it, and I didn't feel up to the task of cleaning it up. But because Tony took the high road in that thread, I'm inclined to do the extra work and clean it up and put it back. Check back tomorrow and it should be restored.

Ernest,
Thanks for taking the initiative to do that. It is most appreciated.
