Many job sites nowaday allow registered member to apply the job online just by clicking couple buttons... I think it is better to send an email to the company in person than use those "Apply Online" buttons.. any opinion?? Also, do u guys tailor-made resume for each job u apply or job one or two killer resumes and used them for all the jobs?? Please let me know.
I am new to this industry, but I have many years in various other industries. But one thing that has to be a good idea is tailoring a CV for a particular post to show that you have done some research into the company. Also, it is a good idea to email the company directly - reading something written in your own words is the next best thing to a face to face interview.
I do not tailor my resume, only improve it when I find out something is unclear when a recruiter or interviewer asking certain questions. That makes me very consistent facing any interviewer, since I only have one resume. Another thing is never tell them you know something you actually do not know well. I'd rather surprise them I actually know more than my resume told them. Of course, I also know people who fabricate their resumes, and succeed. Roseanne
All: With regards to the resume itself - it is never-ever customized. Everyone gets the same resume. Like Roseanne mentioned - you only change your resume if you find interviewers having trouble understanding certain sections, or if/when you gain new skills. With regards to the cover letter. My feelings are that ONLY the first paragraph should be customized. Unsually, I only change/customize the company/recruiter name, the salutation, and where I saw the advertisement. The other two or three paragraphs stay the same. ---------- Why? You are going to be applying to 10-15 jobs per week. You do not have time to do research for the initial contact. Yeah, if there is a particular company that you really, really want to work for - then go ahead and customize the cover letter beyond what I mentioned above. However, for 95% of the cases out there - you only need to spend 5 minutes changing the initial headers and first paragraph of your cover letter. ----- When do you start the research process? Only after the company has made the initial contact do you really start the research process. Usually someone will call to set up an initial phone interview. This very very first phone call will last 5 minutes. It's only to make an appointment to setup the interview. Lots of times they just leave a voicemail on your answering machine, which is ok. Now is when you will start your research. The more you go down the interview path - the more research on the company you will do. --------------- How do you separate myself from the others? 1. You already started the process by doing some research for the telephone interview. 2. You hopefully asked some great questions (based on your research) at the on-site interview. 3. You took mental notes and got business cards while at the on-site interview. 4. You sent thank-you letters / e-mails to the folks you got business cards from. Included in the thank-you letters will be your mental notes which hopefully hit on some of the topics you uncovered in your research. ------------- Remember, it's all a big game. Relax, have fun.
