I would be showing you the errors I get trying to run the Sun HelloUniverse code for OpenGL, but I don't know the java command line switch to catch all the error listing and stack trace that happens when I enter "java HelloUniverse" into my Windows 2000 DOS window.
Anyone able to help me make a better posting?

try piping the error output to a file:
[w2000 or XP]
c:\> java HelloWorld 2> delme
This should give you a file delme that contains
stderr-output.
On a unix system, you'd use the same trick,
I think. On W98 you might have to exclude the
digit (2) before greater-than.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
