web camera -- java

I am designing a java project which need a web camera. Which product has java SDK ?

I am always wondering, how java control a hardware, such as sensor, web camera? people said we need firstly C coding (ioctl) ,then use JNI to wrap it. Some people said we just need to access specific file. And some people said we need to programming serial port communication.

Which one is right?

Thanks

I suppose it depends what type of webcam you have....I played with TimCam @ http://timcam.sourceforge.net/ a bit. It uses Java Media Framework to talk to the camera. In my case a Logitech Pro 3000. It works quite well but freezes up occasionally, but maybe it just needs better error handling.

The basic open source code available @ http://timcam.sourceforge.net/ works fine and would make a good starting point for investigating JMF.
