I am struts application that scales has receive images, scales them, and displays those scaled images. All works fine on my PC. until now I had been using ImageIO to read/write the files.

How should I scale images in a platform indepenant way

  • When I frist tried to deploy the application to the company's sun server. I received an exception stating that it could not find libXm.so.4.(lots on the web about this exception.)
  • After much arguing with the sysadmins, the installed the Xwindows libraries.

  • Now I receive:
java.lang.InternalError: Can't connect to X11 window server using ':0.0' as the value of the DISPLAY variable.
  • the web says I need to install and run an instance of an Xserver.(doubt the sys adms will go for that

  • Thanks for any help. There has to be a simpler solution to scaling and converting images between image formats than requiring Xwindow to be installed and running a Xserver instance.

after searching tons of postings on the internet.
    I solved my problem.
    It all comes down to

    1) install xwindow libraries. nees libXm.so.#
    2) add -Djava.awt.headless=true to the java command
