If you are running Linux, it comes with an SMTP server. Windows XP also comes with an SMTP server, but you have to install it with IIS services. You can also use something like
Postcast which is a free smtp server.
James is a 100% Java SMTP and POP3 mail server. There's no reason you couldn't just use the SMTP part.
SMTP is the protocal for sending Email. I don't know of any way to send mail without using SMTP.
