I am sorry for posting this here if it is totally wrong to do so. I tried to PM this as a message to you but I can't and I wanted to ask the moderators in this forum about this so...

http://faq.javaranch.com/view?CarefullyChooseOneForum

Does this mean don't cross post in JavaRanch itself or also cros-forum posting. There was a war about this recently elsewhere. My only feeling is that it is fine if people post links to the other thread in the other place...

I personally believe most people don't have any bad intent but there do seem to be some who abuse volunteer time by posting (and not including references) across 10 to 20 forums with each question and as a volunteer myself that makes me a bit unhappy.

In the end though I will adhere and use the policies of this site but that particular answer is a bit unclear to me on what the policy in fact is.

Thank you for your time.

Maximilian,
It's fine to post this question in a thread. It would be better in the JavaRanch forum though since it is a question on policy. I'll move it there for you.

It means not to post the same question in multiple JavaRanch forums (or multiple times within the same forum for that matter.) It is ok to post the same question here and at a different forum. Although I recommend seeing if you get an answer here first before going elsewhere

Linking to a question in another JavaRanch forum still has the potential to create multiple discussions of the same thing. Therefore, those threads will be locked or deleted per the policy.

Note that moderators can move your question if necessary. So if you posted in JDBC and it turned out to be a question about regular expressions (or evolved into one), we would move it for you.

Thank you for your question on precisely what this means.

I also changed the subject for you so it will make sense in the JavaRanch forum and because I'm not Bear

And before I forget: Welcome to JavaRanch!

Okay thanks Jeanne. Like I said my orginial question came up in a thread that he posted into with a message about the username policy after I had mentioned about posts on other sites so I was originally trying to follow up on that. But I didn't mean to exclude you and thanks for replying.

As far as the policy goes. Okay. My only comments are that I am probably more of an answerer than a questioner when it comes to posts here so I just wanted to know if it was okay that I had mentioned that the same question had been posted in another forum (not Java Ranch another site).

At any rate I have given up on the other forum site (Sun) altogether so I don't really care either way but I do know that it does upset some people.

And thank you for the welcome. It is a bit quiet in here but very friendly so far. Plus this forum actually works

I didn't feel excluded. I was just joking with the comment about Bear.

Ok. Obviously, my previous response was from the point of view of an person asking questions. For an answer, a note (or even better, a link) to a cross-post in a JavaRanch forum is greatly appreciated. We don't have a stated policy on linking to a question in other forums. If the other forum has an answer, I would say go for it. If not, I think it's pretty neutral. You could link, but what would be the value?

Plus this forum actually works

We strive to achieve. Although that does seem like a low bar.

ps - It's great that you are more of an answerer. We need those!
