Was wondering what people thought was the best way to do reports in java. By this I mean send reports to the printer from either my own data or a JDBC.
Reports would include headers, footers, titles, groups, pages, the whole deal.
Hopefully there would be a GUI to go with it that would create .java
Unless someone thinks there is a better way.

Matan:

I been using two methods for reporting:

PDF reports created with a library like jasperReports are very flexible since you can manipulate the printing with precission. There's a couple of GUI tools that will help you create your report template.

When printing accuracy is not needed i use the old JSP's to generate html reports, new browsers print tables (and web pages in general) in a more intelligent way, preventing the lost of rows or columns. Using a "tiles" system like struts you may generate report templates.

Regards.

Take a look at JasperReports and JFreeReport, both of which are open source.

Hi Ulf,

You seem to know JFreeReport...

Well! I have made a simple report. I have JFreeReport object which I can
display in PreviewFrame. But I am not able to print it to the printer as I don't know what to do next. Also, I don't want to show printer dialog. I viewed Api but... Please help.

I am using jfreereport-0.8.7-6

Thanks,

Maki Jav
