Did you try what was suggested to you
in this thread? That should get you answers pretty quickly.
As to connecting to it with a client, sendmail -as its name suggests- can send email, but it doesn't implement access protocols like POP and IMAP. So you could configure your client to use it for outgoing email, but not for inbound. For outgoing email it should not be different to configure than any other server. That's the beauty of using standard protocols like SMTP.
