java API for peripherals like webcam and barcode reader/scanner

I am working on an application that would connect to a database and also be able to receive input from peripherals like a webcam and barcode reader/scanner and send all this information to the database
can anyone help

Barcode scanners usually have a serial interface, possibly using RS-232 or some other I/O standard. The javax.comm package (or a library like RXTX) can be used to access it.
