I'm trying to use JavaMail to connect to SMTP through localhost and I get this error which says its unable to connect to SMTP using port 25. I've tryed using
telnet localhost 25- still unable to connect. I've added port 25 and localhost to winXP firewall. still no help. I have no other anti-virus or firewall besides what comes with XP Pro (not too smart I know). Any ideas guys?

This seems like a common enough problem, but I'm not finding any answers on the web

If Telnet can't connect, and you don't have a firewall or anti-virus in the way, then one possibility is that you don't have a server running on your computer that is listening at port 25.

Thanks for replying Paul. I am totally stumped by this one.

I start up tomcat (which i guess listens on port 25, but i'm not sure of that)
...still getting same error.
After some more research online, I came to the conclusion that I would have to make changes to the Windows firewall. But: Control panel, Windows Firewall->Advanced Tab->Local area connection->Settings-> "check Internet Mail Server SMTP"-> Edit... still wont work.

Turn off firewall... wont work

Nope. Tomcat is not an SMTP server, so you won't find it listening at port 25.

it works now when I use my company's SMTP server.
