Java 3d: Cylinder with GEOMETRY_NOT_SHARED showing up white

I have a Java3D program, and I'm trying to put several Cylinders that are the same size on the screen. I want to change a cylinder's appearance when something collides with it, but I've been getting an error when I try to. So I think I need to make its GEOMETRY_NOT_SHARED, but when I do that, the cylinder shows up white no matter what appearance I give it.
I've boiled it down to the following code, which goes in the usual framework of the universe and branch group already set up:
It shows up totally white, with no directional lights on it. Is there something else I need to do to make it show its appearance?
