Hi All,
Can someone give me a little direction here? I am wanting to access MS Excel .xls file, parse through it, and add and delete information from it. I am using RandomAccessFile class and using readLine() method. I print this to the console, and most of it looks like gibberish. How can I go about finding out what all of those smiley faces, question marks and blocks mean, and how can I manipulate this data so that I can modify this file externally.(i.e.,not using MS Excel) I realize the answer to this question is probably not a simple one, so if someone can provide any information, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Barry

Can you use ODBC and JDBC? If you're just working with a binary file, you're in for a lot of work - having to get familiar with a proprietary format.

I am not sure I know what you mean. Yes, I can use JDBC, but can you explain how this would help me? Many thanks!

Think of your .xls as a database table. Using JDBC you can connect to it, then run queries, insert rows etc. I've never done this with Excel, but I've seen postings regarding this in the JDBC forum.
