I need to add simple character I/O via two "serial ports" through which objects can read and write to an external "ascii" device. Do I need to design my own native class? For example, on a PC is there a standard (non-JNI)way for objects to access COM ports? Thanks!

There is the "comm api" available from the SUN site that is platform specific. I think they have it available for windows and linux at the moment.
Go to java.sun.com and search for "comm api" and it should turn up. If you need more info on finding it, message me or something... (available under my profile )
Dave.
