hi all,
i was wondering if any one can help me with my problem .
i am using a linux system with J9 VM running on it .
for developement i am using IBM's visual age micro edition 1.4.
now i want to access serial and parrallel ports and do a bit of communication using these , for serial i have workaround opening them as file and send and receive data( any better ideas??).
now i want to use parallel port , can any one tell me how to do it .
i havn't found any classes or packages that i can run on linux with j9Virtual machine . any help would be appreciated .
many thanks
yahya

As for your workaround with the serial ports... I don't think that's a workaround. I think that's the only way you can do it because to linux, everything is a file and so normal read/write operations apply the same to a file whether or not there's actually a physical device behind the file.
My suggestion for the parallel ports would be to do the same (play around with /dev/par*).

You could try the Java Comm API
more info at

Com % /dev/ttyS0

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
