Can MS in Computer Science help to seek a job in this market?
I need some opinion on MS in Computer and Information Systems, which includes business subjects besides databases, networking and web.
Which of the two would be a better choice?
Thanks,
Vasudha

I don't know if having an MS gets anyone a job easier (I have one in CS). But it helps in compensation negotiations.
As for which specific MS you pursue, think about what makes you happy. When I was working on my MS I found grad school courses much more applicable than the theory in undergraduate education. So it comes down to if you want to focus on the technical aspects of the program or have an interest in business.
My guess is if you are interested in the business side, you probably also have management aspirations. Not everyone is interested in pursuing that track, it's a personal decision.
Good luck in your studies!

Hi Vasudha,

How would you rate MS in CIS?
The program has topics like Business Management,Business Systems Analysis and Development,Programming Management,
Databases,Networks and Telecommunications and The Web.
This is the one from Univ of Phoenix.
Please Suggest.

I have seen your other posting that you want to pursue Masters through Online.
Vasudha, speaking with getting Job after MS in mind, if you pursue masters Online 99% of the time you will not have any practical experience.
May be designing a small database system or some small programs in a language of your choice. I have done my masters through ( I dont know If I can mention the univerisity name or not) distance education.I think the Online masters is useful if you are working and want to add a degree to your portfolio/resume. Again from the posting I infer you are not presently working and want to get a job through Masters degree. My school did not help me in getting a job till now. I am doing some odd job (non-IT job). Also I have to tell you, you will need lot of motivation as there will be little help from the school. This is from my experience.I dont have any information on University of Phoenix.
I would suggest you to go for traditional school and try for a Research Assistant or teaching assistant position. Most of the time they waive your fee if you get into such positions.
About MS on MIS, It depends on your interest.I dont know much about MIS( except that it involves Management/Information Systems).
Hope this helps.
If you need more information, let me know.
Good luck,
Jyothy

I hope it is, i have just started an online course myself through the University of Liverpool (UK). It was recommended to me by my head of IT who said that it is great and he is learning a lot of new stuff. I think it is worth it as there are so many BS degrees and vendor exams that its hard to get a head above the rest.
My reasons for doing it were that i want to try and stand out, broaden my knowledge. Jobs nowadays ask for a wide range of skills, i have a few already but hope that the masters will fill out the gaps, show my commitment and help me climb the next step on the corporate ladder. If this sort of thing suits you as well go for it. Several times i have heard that CS is much better to do than something else like Computer and Information Systems as it is the most widely used and well regarded.

I think it depends on the courses u take.I am doing my masters in Information and communication systems, and I have chosen courses in such a way that it almost equals to anyone doing an MS in CS. Not every country offers MS in CS. Here, in germany, they call it informatik and offer degrees like the one I am doing, but the lectures/courses are really good. So choose your courses carefully, thats my opinion.

Hi Jyothy,
When you mentioned practical experience, where you refering to internships or were you refering to the type of projects given to you?
I'm also working on a Master's degree that is partially online. Because the classes are also given in person if one lives in the area, the projects for the distance students are exactly the same as for the in-class students.
As far as interships, I think that there is a definate lack of them for distance students (unless of course you are willing to move near the school's campus and take an internship nearby).
With regards to a school helping it's alumni find jobs after graduation, there are two things to consider. First while distance students should have the same right to use the university's career centers as residential students, the fact that you may be very far from the school makes it more difficult. I often get emails about workshop's my campus's career center is having, but because they are 800 - 900 miles away from me I can't really take advantage of them.
This means that I have to be much more proactive in calling and speaking to people at the career center over the telephone and email. I am also planing to stop by personally when I do my residential portion on campus this summer.
Second, one must consider how much access these universities have to employers outside of their city/state/country (unless you are willing and able to move to the city/state/country of your university).
Thats all for now,
Jon

A plain MS in Computer Science will not help much. I have a BSEE and MSCS but I am still on the lookout for my first real job. Now..let's not leave out the possibility of me unknowingly not doing some things right...right?
So I'd suggest that you go ahead for an MBA/MS in MIS...this way you'd get the programming+business skills into your resume in one shot.
