The latest Image I/O isn't able to write gif files. I'm wondering why not. Seems like that would be the very first format they'd support. Does anyone know why gif isn't supported? Can anyone recommend a reliable plug-in for writing gif files?

Thanks.

Aha... bet this is the reason:

...some file formats like GIF use patented algorithms, so you must pay a license fee to use them.

Well now this is really interesting. I read on the net that the patent on the gif compression algorithm is expiring in just a few days (July 7, 2004). I wonder if there are java gif file writing algorithms somewhere ready to deploy when the patent expires.
