hi all,
JavaRanch has inspired me a lot and i think i shld ask the experts and experienced gurus here abt the twist which im plannig to take in my career. I'm a BSc (3 yrs Bachelors degree) graduate in Computer Science (full time ) and did Masters in the same (part time).. I have 3 yrs of exp in java and have got good exp in Swing, JSP, Servlets, EBJ, Sabre etc etc..But I cldnt find a good break in my career yet, im not getting the right payment, i cant pay for a java cerification exam fee with my one months salary
, u can guess how much im getting.. SO, wat shld i do ?? i took SCJP last October and gonna write SCWCD soon..My question is, shld i stick on java ??? I have plans to shift to Mainframe or SAP coz there are lots of openings here these days..By the way, I'm an Indian...Wat makes me think to shift to mainframe or SAP coz i have been kicked out at many final round HR interviews coz i dont have BE, BTEch (4 year degree)..
I love working on java nd i wish if i cld get into a good cmpny where in can ride a gravy train...
Anyway, cld anyone tell me the the best option for me ?? shld i go for mainframe or SAP..Does a mainframe/SAP professsional has a steady career ?? will it help me to get put some money to my account ??? is it possible for me to get into a mpnay with my academic background ?? guide me in my career..
Thanks
Raj

Why?
You have BSc (3 year) degree in CS and you and the MSc in CS. Why does a four year bachelor still counts?
You have 3 year WORKING experience in all major fields in J2EE. But you wage is only US$150 per month? Even if you are inh India, still does not make sense to me.
You may go for SAP. But the training would be extremely expensive, at least here in US.
cheers,

Hi Raj,
Go to where money falling. I think the problem could be in your logic that's why your monetary reward is not up to par. That's only based on the quote because I have not working with you.
What's about your verbal communication skill and your attitude toward work? Are you proactive? Do you have any verbal handicap? Are you carry yourself well for the interview process? Companies on the other hand will say anything to reject you based on other reasons instead of admitting rejected you solely bases on perception.
The other solution is trying to find job with the government. They usually operate based on merit system. The paid is low, but you gain relaxing work environment with steady income. Some people I know use the government time to work on their own agendas such as selling crappy scheme like Amway.
My personal benchmark 3yrs experience still an entry level. But if someone tells me that he or she works for a small company, then 3yrs is equivalent to senior level.
Cheers,
MCao

thanks for ur reply greg, Matt..
greg, wat is the scope for SAP, ABAP professional in USA ??
Matt, i wont say my communcation skill is bad, but its not that perfect..And regarding the interview i have faced, i got the chace thru my friend and i cleared 3 techincal round telephonic interviews and my interviewer was very much impressed; from my friend i came to know that i can expect a salary of around 800$/month from tat employer..I was so trilled, but my academic background messed it up when my CV was viewed by some1 in senior level and i was simply kicked out...
regardig my work, i used to put 10-12 hrs a day and im really statisfied with the way i perform..im sure, if i work like this in some MNC they will pay be best.. Wat i lacks is , even though i've 3 yrs exp i dont have much knowledge in s/w designing kinda stuffs..
now i have a US offer in my hands..if everything goes fine i'll stick on java or else i will say "good-bye" to java !!! i hope everything will go fine..

Thanks,
raj.

Hi Raj,
In able to line up yourself toward designer end, you need to be proactive. You need to bug the project lead or manager or someone you think have clout in your group for the opportunity. The most important thing is deliver time. If you press for the opportunity than by all mean deliver it on-time error free based on your assessment of the task.
SAP is not a magic solution neither from my POV. I have worked with SAP R/3 previously and the darn thing down all the time. It could not handle the constantly bombardment of data movement from Far East to Europe through America. The engineering reports contain 15% miscalculation. The company later decides to remove it. I think the company previous designers did not know internet will be popular.
Raj, Java or SAP nothing more than tool. You need to learn the technology behind the tools. Recognize the similarity between tools and understand the knowledge that you obtain is vertical or lateral.
Good Lucks with the interviews,
MCao

Where are you based in India Rajeev?
For most companies MSc in CS should be an advantage. I know there are still few stubborn hiring managers who don't want anything but BE/BTech (no matter which branch the come from it could be as irrelevant as Civil or Chemical), but once you have cleared few rounds of technical interview, it shouldn't matter. In fact when he/she gave you this as reason you could have told him that it means 5 years of CS education as compared to 4 years of BE degree, besides, it is not that he comes to know about it only at the time of interview, you have already given few technical interview with the same CV, right?
I think Java, esp J2EE is still very much in demand in India, so with 3 years experience you should get around 30-40K INR in India (600 - 800 USD), if you really get 7-8K with 3 years experince that's too low, consider shifting to bigger cities nearby. Of course SAP pays much more, but you should join only if the company is willing to provide you the training.
Just my thoughts...

Hello Rajeev,
Manish is totally right. Don't worry about someone telling you that they need a B.E./B.Tech. I am sure it's only another moron you'd find in these tough times. If not for this reason they would find something else, equally irrelevant I am sure.
I still can't believe they rejected you for that reason even after you having 5 years of direct education in CS with 3+ years of experience in Java. As for your communication skills, based on your posts I think you are definetely good.
One word of advice though, SAP training costs more than Java cert exams...so think about it.
So, don't take these stupid reasons to heart and keep going full steam on your job search.
Good Luck.

I'm going to have to qualify the communications skills approval. While casual capitalization and elision of vowels is no big deal in a message forum, I hope your business correspondence is more precise.
Unless things have changed greatly in recent times, India is more formal than the US or UK on precise communications.
