Generally I like to use a lot of tabs while I create or edit documents for indentation purposes

But I face this weird problem in javaranch, whenever I hit TAB the focus shifts to the add new topic or submit post button

Many times I end up submitting the post or topic before I have completed it which is very annoying

It would be nice to have the TAB function like I expect it to

Thanks,
Rajagopal

By default with a textarea HTML control or any HTML control, the tab moves focus to other elements on the page based on page rendering or tab index. Unless a person hacks the normal properties of a form element with JavaScript, then there is nothing that can be done.

Ahh..., I generally work on IDE's and Word, Notepad etc, that explains a lot

Unless a person hacks the normal properties of a form element with JavaScript, then there is nothing that can be done

You know I would love to see something like this, My javascript skills are not much to talk about but I am willing implement this myself if you can point me in the right direction

But ofcourse this should be as desirable to others as it is to me.

Thanks,
Rajagopal

Actually I expect most people would rather dislike it. Advancing between form fields with TAB is the expected behavior. Without it, you have to lift your fingers off the keyboard and use the mouse -- quite an annoyance.

Besides: TABs don't show up in HTML anyway.

I'm one of those. I love my keyboard

Disabling the tab also makes usability impossible for some people. If you are using a text to speech reader (because you are blind or vision impaired), you need the keys to work as advertised. Otherwise you can never get out of the text area!

At a minimum, you would need to have a checkbox to turn the feature on. And make it off by default, which minimizes the value of the feature in the first place.
