There are several advantages to servlets/jsp (jsp is compiled to a servlet): servlets are persistent, the servlet container handles a lot of the underlying code so that you can concetrate on business and presentation logic, and servlets are scalable.

The folks around here are hardly going to recommend Perl ... however a more modern dilemma is JSP/PHP. PHP gives you cross platform, sessions, classes bla bla. Perl CGI is like programming blind with a hammer and chisel.
JSP gives you access to everything the entire Java system and more text books than you can shake a big stick at and some very nice development tools (ie NetBeans with its debugger).

About 50 times more Java jobs are advertised than PHP or Perl jobs if that is a factor.
