I think he means Indian Rupees.
It's a very handsome sum.

17 k / 76.75 is approx equal to �221 a month.
I think a Junior developer gets a minimum of �500 in the UK. and can't buy much with it.

I don't think there are any junior developers in the UK that get less than ~�1600 per month. Not with a degree anyway.

IMO, a person earning earning Rs 30,000 per month in India can afford the same comforts (relative - OR developing world's version of it) as that of a person earning about �3000 per month in London.

I didn't realise the pay was so high in India. Don't want to step on any toes but it makes me think that their undercutting won't last long.
Software engineers must live like kings while others suffer. Has any wealth trickled down to the lepers and those that live on the roadside.
You may be as corrupt as the morally inept Americians you choose to criticise( as I do my self ).
Maybe everybody is greedy.

Many of Britians Nothern cities are recieving European Union Social Funds as they are amongst the poorset in Europe. Only the south has money and housing is so costly that even with say a �40,000 a year job you couldn't buy a studio flat. A new style of mortgage has appeared that ropes in parents, as house prices are so high.

If you consider money floating in the black-money market who knows where India stands. There are many more filthy rich Indians than there are filthy-rich Brits. Off-shoring may be one way of making that money useful globally by sucking it off greedy investors.
China and Chinese people in other countries have even more of that kind of money.
That's another rumour I heard.

Winning books is where the fun is.
Writing books is where the bucks are and hard work.
The above "rumour" I got from a book by/about Peter Drucker or his thinking about the future of the world. I may not have interpreted it correctly.
P.S. I'll be writing a book up a mountain somewhere in about 10 years time.Depending on the content of the book it'll be either the Rockies, the Alps or the Himalayas. Don't hold your breath, though.

To me the pay of an Indian software engineer to a the average Indian seems amazing. Has the pick up in the economy helped any of the Indian poor ? I was shocked by India and Nepal when I visited.

Whats outsiders always get wrong about India is its size. At 1 billion, a sixth of the humanity of the entire planet, the present FI in IT field is just a drop in the ocean.
Yes, the overall market situation is better, because of the boom in the IT industry, and more due to privatisation of other key areas (banking, insurance, media(?)) and lately, technology that works for masses (mobile phone, internet etc) is bringing down costs even further, helping everyone to get richer and afford better life styles.
The number of poor people in India is steadily coming down, but there's a lot to be desired in that area. We (Indians) hope that once technology and privatisation brings better literacy levels, public awareness etc, it would reduce corruption, which actually is the real problem in India.

The money market will be coming out of the equivalent of the Kleinworts and Grenfells of the triads etc. Well that's how banking started in the west, anyway.
Either that or a battle of international "banksters" looms.

Chaps ... I got a email fwd of the salaries listed here ... seems to be hitting the "forward" wave everywhere for prospective employees taking up interviews - but tellya what - This seems to show how better the job scene is now - almost like the good ol' days !! :-)
