JSP sessions are maintained the same as in servlets (since JSP's are really just servlets turned inside out, so to speak). The server assigns a pseudo random ID string to each request not already associated with a session. Since HTTP is a stateless protocol, the ID string is passed back and forth either in cookies, or URL-encoded into the query string. This allows the server to preserve some memory of the client's session, and store objects associated withthe session (such as a shopping cart).
