i am working on a module of inventory. To add an item to the inventory say chair i assign it a code and then the name chair. now when I have to issue an item in another module, what approach will be best so that user do not have to remember all the codes of an item and nor do I have to show the drop down of all the items.

As long as the user could remember the proper name, you could have your code do a search of item numbers and automatically suggest a number based on the search results.
For instance:
item #581 greenhorn
When the user is in another module and types greenhorn, a search of the inventory will return number 581. Of course you'll have to pay attention to scope, etc.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
