I've been experimenting with JSF for a couple of weeks now and have been frustrated by the bugs in the current version and the fact that only those on the "in" know when the next release will be public.
While waiting for this 1.0 release of faces would we possibly get relief by using available implementations like myfaces to solve bugs as they release patch much more often? Has anyone used myfaces or another non-RI version of faces that could tell us if there is cleaner implementation available?

MyFaces is much easier to find out what is wrong.
Most of the bugs that I've found in the RI are configuration problems which are very hard to track down without the source or good logging. From the beta readme it looks like the logging part will be addressed in the next release.
Did you send the bugs you have found to the spec team? They always like bug reports. I'm not 'in' the know but from time to time one of the spec participants lets something slip on the forum. Go search there for a new date, perhaps there is more known that we know
