I'm new to JSP and I would like to get a understanding of how tag libraries work. I understand that a tag library is used to extend the functionally of the JSP but how? For example if a taglib defined with the prefix=html, I'm guessing I can use html tag in my JSP as long as those tags are inside of my html tags right? And how do I set up my TLD file with other stuff?

Welcome to the JavaRanch! We don't have many rules around the 'Ranch, but we do require your display name to follow the JavaRanch Naming Policy.
You can change it here.

A good way to understand tag libraries is to look at some of the more popular tag libraries that are used:

-JSTL - The JSP Standard Tag Library
-Jakarta TagLibs - JSTL++

Also, here is an article on O'Reilly's site that shows how to build a tag library for dynamic menus.

Thanks! and welcome to the JavaRanch!

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
