"Loading the servlet class" - loading of the actual class file into the servlet/JSP engines JVM - analougous to "Class.forName( "com.foo.ServletSubclass" )".

"Instantiation of servlet class" - creating an instance/object of the previous class. - analougous to "new ServletSubclass()" or "Class.forName( "com.foo.ServletSubclass" ).newInstance()".
