Book: Aussies hardest workers
SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) -- Forget the image of the laid-back Aussie lifestyle, Australians now work more hours than Americans or Japanese and rank as the hardest-working people in the developed world, according to a new book.

I can believe that.
At my garden centre works a part-time Aussie , travelling back-packer who bought his own pad by the beach at 17 years old and now is seeing / working his way round the world with his girl-friend before settling down to marriage and kids. Seems to have got it together pretty well. Not the first Aussie I have seen do that either.

How much did the pad cost? At age 17 I hardly think he bought the pad with his own money. Using "mum's money" is more like it. Every kid and his brother is "going around the world, working". It's not that difficult, just depends on how attached you are to your family :-)
On another note, I think that Aussies are the most arrogant folks I have run into. Well, I don't really think that. Ever gone into IRC? I'm sure every person here has gone to #java on irc.freenode.net. Point being, there is a very amusing character in the #java and #c++ channels named "The_Vulture". He is from Australia, and I don't think I have run into a more arrogant individual in my life. Working isn't something that I picture him doing, because all he does is belittle others. The time he spends in those two channels, making clear his philosophies on life to everyone, I just can't imagine how he gets anything else done in his life.

Hahaha I have actually talked to that person on IRC and hanged around those channels 1 year ago for a while.
He is indeed kinda arrogant and he is the operator, he lives in Sydney

Anthony -
As an Australian (though an increasingly unpatriotic one in this poltical clime) I feel the need to defend my countrymen : What you said could equally imply that IRC users are the most arrogant, or that Java/C++ progs are.
If I were going to choose the most arrogant country, it'd be #@$&@# <message edited in advance by Tim to save mods the trouble>.
I might as well judge all Americans by the actions of your (their?) illustrious president...
/me ducks
On a side note, 90% of my posts here happen whilst waiting for a WebLogic server to start, so I don't think I'm officially "slacking off". How convenient eh?

Unfortunately I'm not brilliant - I'm a fairly junior developer. I'm quite happy working with a server that's set up and behaves itself...I certainly couldn't set one up properly for a new project. At least, it would take me a while.
There is a WebLogic forum though, I imagine people there know more than me

OT - you gotta thank those weblogic and silverstream guys - a server restart allows just enough time to go to the loo or for a coffee!!
