What is the definition of Software Architect and what type of responsibilities come under this role?

In my experience he's the guy with the whiteboard and beamer who draws all kinds of theoretical diagrams about how the software should work and be built, then sits back for several months while the programmers create the software, and after that blames everyone but himself when it doesn't work.
