Hi all,
I am facing very interesting problem. In my tomcat project, in the web.xml I gave Index.jsp as the parameter for welcome file list. So when I just give the context name alone in the URL, it will take me to Index.jsp. I have a Login page also in this context. When most of the user enters the application using the URL "http://<servername>/<contextname>/" some are taken to the login page but some are taken to the Index.jsp page. How can this happen?

Any explaination for this is very much appreciated.

Regards,

The welcome files are looked for in the order you have specified in web.xml. In addition, some containers also recognise certain files as default welcome files, say index.html

What is the name of your login page? Try naming it 'loginpage.jsp' (or some name which are not common for welcome files) and add index.jsp as the first entry in welcome file list.
