JSP EL is better than those JSP expressions. Because its cleaner, JSP special and works great with JSP in XML.

The JSTL EL is a JSP-focused EL designed to replace embedding java code. It has been superseded by the EL in JSP 2.0.

EL stands for Expression Language.
It's a new form of scripting tool for JSP.
Example: The Sum is ${2 + 4}

JSP 2.0 supports this, right out of the box.
Previously, these expressions could only be used inside JSTL tags.

A quick Google search will bring up all kinds of tutorials and longer explanations.
