I have my web application through which (say a jsp page) i have to send an http request to a particular website say xxx...passing certain request parameters in the url. The data that is returned back is in an excel report format. I have 2 questions:
1. Using http request, how can i hit a particular website ?? are there any apis available ??
2. once i hit the website, how can i read the data which is returned in an excel sheet format. (It will have 4 columns - Type, Name, No1, No2).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Ben, but it still does not solve my problem.

How do i access mime objects over HTTP. e.g. There is a remote server on which there is an excel sheet/ sound file. I need to download the same via an http request through Java/ JSP. This will be running as a background task, thus, there will be no user action involved.

Well, there's the java.net.HttpUrlConnection object.

Or, if you want to do it the easy way, there is the Jakarta HttpClient library:
http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/httpclient

Once you get the file back from the HTTP Request, the comments and link my last post will apply.
