Resume evaluation firms - any experience?

Has anyone had any experience with those firms that evaluate your resume? I feel like I need to improve my, um, novel and was looking for help in doing so. However, I'm not prepared to drop anywhere from USD$50 to $1000 or more on a service I know nothing about.

As an alternative, is it ok to ask for evaluations in the Saloon? I don't really want to air too much but there are lots of talented and honest cowpokes here who might be able to help.
