I currently work in the US and I am interested in knowing abt the job market in Bombay. I do know that Bangalore/Hyderabad companies do pay more than Bombay ones, but i am speficially interested in Bombay companies. I am looking at MNCs like Accenture, Cap Gemini etc. I want to know what other MNCs exist in Bombay. Can anybody provide me with a list. Also who are the paymasters. I take it that MNCs pay more. Also can somebody tell me what kind of pay should i be looking for. I have 8.5 yrs experience, almost all of it in Java/J2EE.

In Mumbai, there are not many good IT companies as most of them are in Bangalore/Hyderabad/Chennai.If you interested in good companies, you can look at Pune,157 KM south of Mumbai.Kanbay,Persistent,Infosys,Wipro,Congnizant are there. In addition you will also find small to medium sized startups working in different areas raning from J2EE,embedded software.Sybase has recently started the operation there.Avaya Communications is seeking many people at its Pune location. If you are aware of this area, you must be knowing that Mumbai-Pune is now 2.5 hours drive. Many IT companies from Mumbai have already relocated to Pune as land is cheap and quality of life is many times better than Mumbai.

Soniya,
Delloite Consulting also has its development centre in Mumbai.
On your remark that MNCs are paymasters. Well its not the whole truth. The pay is comparable to the Indian companies out here.
Also lot of people prefer Indian companies because there are hardly any longterm appoutunities in US multinationals and secondly the work seems to be on the better side in Indian companies. This is because lots of projects that are under development in US companies out here have already been thr all the phases of Reqt. analysis & design etc.. the Indian developers most of the time get to do only coding/testing (this is a general case though exceptions exist).
Whereas in Indian projects are did from the scratch.

Take an informed decision.

Arjun Shastry: In Mumbai, there are not many good IT companies...
Me: Arjun, i understand that, but since I am originally from Bombay, my first preference wud be Bombay. And hence, I am first trying to understand the market in Bombay.

Kaustubh Patil: On your remark that MNCs are paymasters. Well its not the whole truth. The pay is comparable to the Indian companies out here.
Me: Kaustabh, I happened to hear abt 1 thumb-rule that MNCs tend to pay 30% more than the top Indian companies. Ain't that true??

Do u think that there is a preference for people returning from US? Are they paid more or something like that.
BTW, Arjun, I received a call from Trilogy who have their offshore in Bangalore. Have u heard abt this company and if yes, what is ur opinion abt Trilogy.

I don't have much idea.If you have permanent residentship there thenof course yes, preference will be given to those people as they can be put 'onsite' immediately.Otherwise,I think it purely depends on company and kind of work it does.
Trilogy should be good.(They have office nearby my house!).Atleast I can tell you they have taken big space in Salrpuria Towers near Oracle on Banerghatta Road.It used to hire only from selected institutes once upon a time. They are headquartered in Texas(USA) or somewhere.Other than that I don't have much idea.

a top university such as IIT, Pune, Anna, BITS.
2. 3+ years of experience, working hands on with C++, Java, J2EE, enterprise class databases (ideally in
developing business applications). Must have demonstrated proficiency in one of these technologies.
3. Must have experience in writing complex algorithms.
4. Strong written and verbal communication skills allowing the person to effectively work with team members based both in India and the US.
This indirectly means preference will be give to those who were in USA for working visa IMO.

Hi,

There is quite a lot of requirement for Java/J2EE professionals in Bombay, especially with Cap Gemini, Mastek, Accenture, TCS.

Both have small marketing offices. I hear Wipro has some developement facility in New Bombay - no idea about size etc. Don't think Satyam has a developement facility in Mumbai. Having said that, Satyam has some specific requirements for persons with that level of exp (considering your 8.5yrs exp) - in technical consulting kind of work. These are based at Mumbai.

Me: Kaustabh, I happened to hear abt 1 thumb-rule that MNCs tend to pay 30% more than the top Indian companies. Ain't that true??

This is in part true. However, this doesn't paint the whole picture. The attritrion rate is very high (i mean high - knowing the attrition rate of s/w cos in general) in most of these MNCs. I've myself seen many people from Accenture, Cap Gemini quitting within 4-6 months. Though I don't have first-hand knowledge, the reasons sited by some are lack of growth opportunities, dissatisfaction about company policy etc. There could be other reasons - try to get first hand knowledge from someone who has worked in those companies.

The general outlook is that if you are looking at a stable job, you are OK with having somewhat fewer growth opportunities, then YES, there are lot of good companies in Mumbai.
However, if you are looking at growth, (mainly), then very limited options are there.
